Another article describing Dan Curtis as a hulking wild man and describing the hectic scene on the set of House of Dark Shadows. At least this one works in some mention of his wife and family, albeit with pithy remarks, of course, and his life before and during DS. I don't know why I expected high cultured critiques of the show since it was always categorized as camp but most of these sort are dismissive of the cultism of the show more so than its wide appeal as great and innovative television. This is also, unfortunately, one of those archival reprints that clips off the last letters of sentences at the margins. Luckily, there isn't much new to be learned from it and the words fill in themselves.

Series Born Of A Dream

It's a well-established fact that Dan Curtis claimed that the idea for the show came from a dream and in this article he reiterates that point along with the supernatural elements which crept into the original elements of the gothic drama.

I didn't know that the show used the theremin for some of the sound effects and music though it certainly makes sense. Is that what Cobert used for the soundtrack too?

Here's an excellent interview/biopic of Jonathan Frid by David Cobb from the April 4, 1969 edition of The Montreal Gazette. This was at the height of "Dark Shadow's" popularity and Frid, as Barnabas, was as popular as Jackie Kennedy. In a completely difference sense, of course, but just the same they were pop icons in the truest definition of the word.

There was grumbling from the middle of the "Shadows" run on ABC that Dan Curtis wanted to be free of the show to pursue other things. In this article he proclaimed that his made for television production of "Dracula" starring Jack Palance would be his last vampire film endeavor and it proved to be so, although he did produce the remake of "Dark Shadows"on NBC in 1991.
